reflections

As promised I've made a video. I must apologize for the color, it looks way too dark. That seems to be the case with You Tube; all the vid's i've uploaded turned out darker. The top picture represents the color the frame has in real life. It's mahogany, finished with two coats of Danish Oil, and on top of that a few coats of good old bees wax, for a subtle satin shine. I thought about gilding it but im not sure... what do your think?

You can get a bigger & better image by clicking again on the video once it starts to run. You should go to You Tube itself then.

Enjoy,

  1. Debora I just started to look at blogs and found your mirror waiting there, I haven't watched your video yet but expect you have carved this masterpiece yourself. I am stunned by your craftsmanship, it is just beautiful!

  2. Debora,
It looks wonderfull......I really like this model! And don't put gold on it such a shame of your work! I like the wood color on it. By the way I had my first woodcarve experience last weekend with David Hurley. Which was wonderfull.
    Thanks,
    Jeffry.

  6. Debora, it's absolutely fantastic work! Happy that Pfeil chisels worked for you, such a great result! Congratulations! IMHO, gilding would be a great option, loved the pictures of the process on Harry W. Smith site - you might've seen them - http://www.harrywsmith.com/Miniatures/Pages/Carving_Palm_Mirror.html
    Congrats again! :)

  11. Deborah, it is simply stunning, you sure are inspiring me to try my hand at carving. As to gilding, I think you will just have to carve a new one to gild, I am not sure if gilding will stick now after Danish oil (how did you find working with it???????) and beeswax, I think a gilded one will look wonderful with the right furniture!!!!!!!

  12. Your woodwork is absolutely stunning Deborah. I simply cannot understand how you make all the delicate details. In my humble opinion...don´t guild this one!

  16. Incredible, I'm speechless! You are so skillfull and patient! I'm in awe of your work! I love the woodfinish you gave it! If you want a guilded one perhaps you can make a mold with liquid rubber from this one, and make a copy. The wood is to beautifull to gild in my opinion ;)
I love the video! it gives a good idea of the size and the details!

  17. Oooh wow, lot's of comment's already. Thank you all for your appreciation, i'm so glad you like it. Remember it was a practice piece for some new tools and it has one major flaw that I'm not gonna point out :-) But Yeah, I'm pleased with it too. So thanks to you all!

@ Jeffrey, I checked your blog from day to day... you are gonna post about it I hope!? Don't mind me saying but I envy you some... it must have been a marvelous experience. Hope you enjoyed and took home lot's of new skills for the future.
@ Victoria, if it wasn't for your tip... XD >Kiss< And of course H.W. Smith for his inspiration and encouragements. His work is breath taking.

  18. @ Elga, I tried the Oil and it seals the wood perfectly with the first coat. Additional coats give a sharp gloss that is not for me, but I can see it work on other pieces, hence the wax on top. Reading the directions on the can and on the net I take it you can gild over it. You can't of course over the wax, but that's easily removed if wanted. I'm thinking of doing another one out of lime wood, that's softer and plain looking, and gilding that as finish?

  19. Wonderful, wonderful job!
The video has sparked my tears, I always get emotional in front of masterpieces (aided by the background music...)
If I may venture my humble opinion, I find perfect the mirror, as it is, it does not seem quite dark, indeed: on a bright wall, stand out all her perfection.
    Are you a fairy?
    Mini hugs, Flora

I can imagine how much enjoyment you must have gotten from seeing it develop in your hands.

  25. PS: nee niet vergulden, maar ja ik hou dan ook erg van hout. Een tweede in een eenvoudige houtsoort en die dan vergulden...JA!

  27. Thanks every one for the advise about gilding or not. It's just that most mirror frames in that style have some sort of applied finish, be it gold or paint. Hence my doubt. But like some of you mentioned, the color of this wood so nice... And I agree.
