making the most of a rainy day

Two years ago I'd bought a marble table top at a Doll's Houseshow in Arnhem. I liked it so much i figured i would make a table for it. But maybe you know how things can go...other jobs popped up, no inspiration etc... and it was stored away for a rainy day. And that day came yesterday. I figured I would put two and two together as i have a lot of stuff on my mind. And i have found carving very meditational and calming to do.

So i have started to carve a base for the top. 4 little serpentine legs with scroll feet... still in the dark about a lower shelf between the legs, but w'll see...

  1. The legs are just beautiful and will be even more so when you have finished them. I love the marble top. Is it actually marble or is it made of something else? What kind of wood are you using?

  5. Debora, WOW!!! Those legs are so incredible! I would love to know what type of wood that is too. Also, What are you using to carve them with? Actual carving tools or exacto knife? They are really amazing and will look stunning with the marble top! Can't wait to see it finished!!

  6. It was a quick posting so sorry for being incomplete. The black tabletop is actually real marble, 1,5 mm thick and nicely feathered with green and white.

The wood is merantie, quit basic and maybe too open a grain. But it's what I had at hand; hard and a nice color. For carving I always use a scalpel, nr 4. with the semi rounded blades used by surgeons. Just that, nothing else as real carving tools, especially for miniature work, are very expensive and hard to get by. What I do wish for are riffle files. Files with rounded tops used by gold and silver smiths. You can get into all the little corners and crevasses with those...

The finishing will be a big hurdle to take as i find it hard to do that right.... I can't use a filler for the open grain as that's way to hard with all the carving. And what kind of stain, if needed? And a finish...? Lacker? polish? or just basic wax? ...I don't know yet....anybody? help!

  7. I also find carving to be soothing to my soul. Given the time zones and the fact I could not get to sleep the other night when a storm was raging, who knows but we both may have been carving on miniatures on a rainy day at the same time across the world from each other.

The table legs are looking very nice.

I sometimes use micro wood carving chisels made for ship modelers. The brand name of the chisels is "Dockyard."

Another online source for micro carving chisels by other companies is at this website.

  8. Debbie, just wanted to let you know that I just love your work. You truly are an amazing craftswoman.

I wish I can help you with suggestions on the finishing but whenever I have queries on furniture, I ask a carpenter :).

  9. You have done a fabulous job on the carving, the legs look really good. I am sure it will look fantastic when finished. You could stain, wax or paint a distressed finish.

  10. Hi Debora,It's absoltely great what you made,I'm always stunning how you can work with wood ,you are so talented !!! I would use only an antique wax for your work,it gaves the work a shiny touch ,but don't change your wondeful colour of wood .Hugs,Jeannette

  12. ¡Que maravilla de patas! Fue una suerte encontrar el mármol real de ese tamaño. Las patas están muy bien, no las tapes mucho con tintura, sólo cera será perfecto.
Pero si ya sabes donde la vas a poner la decoración de la escena manda.
    Me encantan.

It seems awfully hard to get 4 same legs. You did it!!! The marble have beautiful shapes, did you done yourself?

  16. Oh Debbie the legs are beautiful! I have the same table top laying in a drawer, but not such a lovely base for it in the making...Your work is always a pleasure to look at.
I'm not sure what to use as a finish. I think you should try a few different finishes on a piece of scrap wood and see what works best in this case.
I look forward to seeing it finished!

  18. Thanks every one. As we speak I am in the garden, carving away and enjoying one of the last days of summer. Quit a contrast with a few days ago. Hope it's the same at your place Karin.

As for the finish; did some tests and I'm tempted to go for wax. Just like Jeanette suggested. It's that subtle shine only a few good layers of wax can give you.

  20. We are having a nice mix of sun and rain this year. No garden at my workshop but I have a beach just 100 steps away. I don't work out there, it is where I go to get away from it all.
